The elders of a city were leaders that were responsible for legal rulings. In Ruth 4:1, Boaz went to the city gate and sat looking for a certain leader to talk with about Ruth. Boaz was looking to redeem Ruth but needed permission from an elder of the city to do so.

The husband of the Proverbs 31 woman was known by the leaders of the city. He was a man of honor and respect.

The gates of the city were a place where there were important things happening. A woman of character and excellence should have a man of similar character and stature standing next to her. Authority begets authority.
