The Wait – #3

In the wait, it can be hard to remember the larger picture of life. God has plans and purposes for each of us, but during the time of waiting, we can become consumed with what we are waiting for in such a way that the thing we are waiting for can monopolize our mind. Our prayers. Our actions. Putting God behind the thing we are waiting for.

Abraham and Sarah knew what it was to want and wait for something. Their desire to have a child became the focus in their lives. I can imagine, although the Bible doesn’t say this, that it was a daily topic of discussion. Can’t you just see them talking and dreaming about when they would get pregnant? Dreaming about whether it would be a boy or a girl they would have. Seeing the children around them, and imagining their child being among them.

As each year slipped by without Sarah getting pregnant I can imagine their conversations became less animated and hopeful. Their hope in the promise the Lord gave them began to wane. Their discussions turned from hope that God had spoken to, how could they make their promise of having a child a reality.

Resulting in them stepping out of the plans and purposes God had for them in their season of wait, and taking control to do it themselves. They got tired of waiting.

Hebrews 12:2 says that we should look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith for joy, and patience in the wait. When we set our eyes on Jesus he will do abundantly more in the wait of our promises to come.

He is such a good Father. He will do what only he can do. He will take what little we have and provide breakthrough while we wait for Him to move.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Hebrews 12:2 ESV
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
